After WWII, American soldiers bought and sold Levi’s jeans on the black market. This stream of once illegal transactions introduced a lot of western culture to the east. Since then, themes of American work/military wear and the classic Americana culture as a whole became highly sought after in Asian countries, especially Japan. Plenty of Japanese brands have tried and failed to produce authentic Americana garments throughout the years, but as we all know, nobody does it better than Kapital. Since 1985, Kapital has been producing garments of the highest quality that encapsulates the classic Americana aesthetic. What separates Kapital from the rest is their dedication & ability to incorporate traditional Japanese elements which in the end, create unique garments unlike anything else!
Kapital’s Spring 2011 collection entitled “FARMY” pays homage to the hardworking Midwestern American farmers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many pieces from this collection incorporated patchwork detailing and the use of overdyeing techniques to create a worn feel and look.
Here we have an incredible long sleeve tee from Kapital’s Spring 2011 collection. This piece features a faded “FARMY” script motif woven into the garment. The faded F is used to split the references of farming and army – both of which are aesthetic influences used by Kapital quite often. What makes this piece so special is its patchworked sleeves. Consisting of Hemp, Acrylic, Cotton, and Wool, this highly-executed patchworking pays homage to the traditional American textile known as “Shoddy”. shoddy are the materials produced from the recycling of wool waste. This low-grade cloth is made from the by-products of wool pressings or recycled wool. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this fabric was commonly worn by American farmers and soldiers. While this piece references a low-quality material of the time, this piece is nothing but quality, and that is to be expected from the iconic Japanese label Kapital.
