Number (N)ine’s runway show for its Spring/Summer 2002 collection ‘The Modern Age’ concluded with a presentation of Gotham-themed t-shirts. Used to solidify the collections ideology & references, Takahiro Miyashita pays homage to the American Beatnik culture of the mid-20th century. The Beatnik was a media stereotype prevalent throughout the late 1940s to mid-1960s that displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation literary movement. Elements of the beatnik trope included pseudo-intellectualism, drug use, and a cartoonish depiction of real-life people along with the spiritual quest of Jack Kerouac's autobiographical fiction. Individuals of this sect were fascinated with literature, fine arts, and anti-consumerism/capitalism. Miyashita incorporated the Gotham motifs as an indirect reference to New York City – the most prominent location of this unique subculture.
This t-shirt from Number (N)ine’s Spring/Summer 2002 ‘The Modern Age’ collection features an elegantly aged ‘Gotham City’ typography graphic screen-printed onto the chest of a high-quality 100% Japanese cotton t-shirt.
