Throughout Takahiro Miyashita’s time with the cult Japanese label Number (N)ine, we see Rock n Roll references time and time again. From numerous references of various rock legends to Miyashita’s own band “The High Streets”, it is hard to ignore the fact that the aesthetic and persona of Rock n Roll are truly engraved within the brand. Number (N)ine’s FW99 collection marks the beginning of a decade of Rock n Roll-inspired pieces and collections. FW99 pays homage to the genre with The Beatles-inspired garments and Fender logo references.
Here we have a rare t-shirt from Number (N)ine’s Fall/Winter 1999 “Rock” collection. This piece features a unique digi-cowboy graphic screen-print with a foil-like color that makes the image really pop. What makes this graphic so interesting is its two-way ambigram-like properties – If you flip the graphic upside-down, some say you can see a silhouette of a man wearing a cowboy hat in a nodding motion. This is a reference to a popular 1964 interview with Paul McCartney and The Beatles on a local Dallas, TX news channel. While this is totally speculative, the reference pic is on my story so let me know what you think!
